ADHD

What is ADHD?

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a neurodevelopmental difference that affects how people focus, plan, and respond to the world around them. It’s present from childhood and reflects a particular way of attending to and engaging with tasks, thoughts, and surroundings.

Despite the name, ADHD isn’t about a lack of attention, it’s more about difficulty regulating attention. People with ADHD often describe flipping between struggling to focus or filter distractions and “hyper-focusing” on something to the exclusion of everything else. This can mean that other important tasks, like eating, resting, or self-care, get missed.

People with ADHD may:

There are different subtypes of ADHD -not everyone shows hyperactivity, even though it’s in the name. These include:

Inattentive subtype

Hyperactive/Impulsive subtype

Combined subtype

Deciding whether to explore an ADHD diagnosis for yourself or your child can feel like a big decision. It’s not always clear whether the traits you're noticing point to ADHD, or whether an assessment would be useful. There are many reasons why someone might find it hard to regulate their attention, manage tasks, or navigate emotions; ADHD is just one possibility. That’s why our team includes both clinical psychologists and speech and language therapists. Together, we bring a broad set of clinical skills to explore what’s going on, consider other possibilities, and build a clear picture of someone’s strengths and needs.

We offer a free 30-minute discovery call to talk it through. It’s a chance to ask questions, share what you’re noticing, and decide together whether an assessment is appropriate or likely to be helpful.

Please note: As a psychology and speech and language-led service, we offer a full formulation and detailed recommendations following assessment but we do not prescribe medication. If you’re hoping to explore medication following a diagnosis, this would need to be done through a paediatrician, psychiatrist, or independent nurse prescriber. We have links with a private paediatrician and an independent pharmacist who are happy to accept our comprehensive assessments and reports.
